Difference between the D’s

Dreams or Desire

There is a fine line that differentiates dreams and desire, which some might have a misconception about them. Have some thoughts to yourself, how would you have answered when asked, “Do you have a dream? What is it?”.

Dreams

What are dreams? Some might start having wild imaginations about leading the life they ever wanted, having the freedom to do whatever it takes to give them happiness. As far as it runs, how do we define if it’s a dream or a desire?

It can get confusing when thinking about dreams, especially as we experience advancement in the stages of our lives, and being put under the various sources of stress and pressure for the means of survival. How do I define a dream? A dream is a role, a constant activity continuously running, followed by a need to accomplish regardless of factors influencing one’s capabilities of achieving.

Remember back in the days when we used to discuss what we want to do and be when we grow up? We can dream of many different things we want to do and who we want to be, where mostly were done so in the early stages of our lives, mainly due to the freedom of imagination without all that stress and pressure to survive. Now, lets take a look at desire.

Desire

As we grew older and started taking on responsibilities, we start to imagine ourselves being able to be free from all the stress. What happened to the dreams we used to have when we were younger? As the need to accomplish diminishes over time, we tend to convince ourselves that those were not realistic, practical, or rational.

Wanting to become a millionaire, achieving financial freedom, being able to afford to do anything and everything, are things that are sought after by some, while others may wish for simple things such as retirement when we grow old.

Desire, is defined as a strong need of wanting something. However, in determining our ultimate goal in life, it can be determined as the destination of where we want our journey to end at. One may say “my dream is to live in a ten-million-dollar property and drive a million-dollar vehicle”. Now, do we classify it as a dream or a desire?

Dreams vs. Desire

There are few things we can realize after giving much thoughts into the factors that defines the both D’s. Dreams are the things that we want to do and be, without the consideration for financial achievements, whereas desires are the things we want to have, which are heavily dependent on financial achievements. Though we can form dreams at any point or stage in our lives, the deciding factor on pursuing them is often pivoted on the earnings that we can possibly have doing them.

What is the cause of the diminishing? In the next post, we will be looking at the factor influencing the diminishing of our need to fulfill our dreams.
